The senseless shootings at Columbine High School (April 20,1999) in Colorado, touched the community and the nation with shock and disbelief. A permanent public memorial near the high school was established ( in 2007) to recognize and honor those innocent victims.

Last Sunday, I spent the afternoon in this observation room of Bruckner's Nature Center, a nature preserve dedicated to environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation. There was an array of bird feeders beyond the glass windows.
I experimented taking photos through glass...and facing the sun...not a good combination.
Bruckner's wildlife rehabilitation program cares for, rehabilitates and releases wildlife expected to survive in the natural habitat.
These two birds were housed in outdoor structures while being cared for. Here I experimented with the wire caging in the foreground. I'm not sure why the cage seemed to disappear in front of the eagle but not the owl.

Barn Charm in My World

While driving in the country, I came upon this "three-addition" barn. It seems that each separate barn was built onto the last one. BTW this was last weekend when the sun was out and the sky was blue...unusual for Ohio this time of year when gray skies prevail.A close up of the first barn shows this blue vehicle tucked inside.

I drove by this barn on Saturday, and turned around to drive back and get a shot. When I got out of the car, I noticed the little barn to the left.The larger barn is badly in need of repairs. I liked the green roof on a red barn.

Charleston Falls Preserve in My World

About five minutes from my house is a 216 acre nature preserve featuring this 37 foot waterfall. It is beautiful in the summer ( I plan to return in warmer weather to take photos) but I think it is more captivating in the winter when the falls are frozen, although it is quite a cold walk into the woods to reach the falls area. The park also has picnic areas, hiking trails, and winter cross-country skiing.

Entitled "Celebration", this piece is the work of American born artist Christopher Ries.In Celebration, Ries uses the finest, colorless optical glass cut and polished in simple shapes.
As one walks around the work and views it at various angles, the refraction of light within appears to alter and change the designs which Ries has applied to the exterior.

It is that time of year when deer come out of the woods and into the harvested fields looking for a bit of leftover corn or beans.

This mother and her fawn were about to cross the road and enter the field when they spotted me.
They turned around and headed back into the woods and then I saw a second fawn. This happened in less than a minute, and then they were gone.Check out more My World photos on the sidebar.

My World in The Wilds

The Wilds is a 10,000 acre wild life conservation center in Southeast Ohio. It is home to rare and endangered species from around the world living in natural, open range habitat.I took the safari tour this Saturday, which lasted about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It was an extremely bumpy ride, but our tour guide stopped often so we could take pictures.
These wild horses followed our tour bus for almost half of the trip.
The White Rhino is a threatened species. The wide open spaces of The Wilds allows them to live in natural social groups which foster breeding.
This is an endangered One-horned Asian Rhino.

The Scimitar-Horned Onyx has been extinct in the wild since the mid 1970's.In 2007 an Onyx born at The Wilds was part of a group sent to Tunisia for a reintroduction project.

There are fewer than 3000 Grevy's Zebras (endangered) remaining in the wild.
Hunting for their skins and competition for food and water with domestic livestock are contributing factors in the decline in Grevy's Zebras.
Two large humps of fat are one of the distinguishing features of the Bactrian Camel. This fat allows the camel to survive long periods without food or water.
There are less than 1,000 wild Bactrian Camels left.
And this is me taking pictures at the back of our tour bus. What a fun trip this was.

When I see pumpkins, I know it's fall. Hershberger's farm, in the heart of Amish country, sells home baked goods and seasonal home grown produce.In addition to the baked goods and produce, they also offer pony rides and a petting zoo to get to know the animals at the farm situated between Charm and Berlin.

Fountain

Located in downtown Dayton, the Five Rivers Fountain of Lights is created by five water jets that shoot 2,500 gallons of water per minute toward the center of the river.

The powerful center geyser rises from the jets two hundred feet in the air. The fountain is equipped with directional wind sensors. If the wind is blowing in a direction and at a velocity that could interfere with area traffic or other activities, individual jets of the fountain will not operate.The fountains are on a daily run schedule operating at sixteen minute intervals. Enhancing the beauty of the fountains are stainless steel spires that are lit throughout the year by 25 "intelligent lights" that can produce an infinite variety of colors.

Warm humid weather and sufficient rain have contributed to the abundant corn crop in Ohio. When driving in rural areas, corn fields are visible in every direction. Last year's corn harvest was a record high; and USDA forecasts possible record yields yet again. This may be less than exciting, but this feeds America.

Environmental Emergency

Grand Lake St. Marys, Ohio's largest inland lake (nearly 13,500 acres), continues to struggle with degraded water quality.
A popular recreational sight for boating, fishing and swimming, all water activities are now prohibited due to an outbreak of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). State actions for water quality improvement are underway including treatment of the polluted lake by replacing the bacteria with non-harmful algae and aeration. However, one of the primary causes of surplus nutrients entering the lake is the amount of farms in the watershed area. The Agriculture Dept. is addressing this problem.

Cox Aboretum, part of the Dayton Metropark System, is a beautiful 189-acres of parks and gardens.It is a special place to escape among trees, shrubs, gardens, forests, and prairies.

The Cadet Chapel of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs is built in the Expressionist Modern style. The striking exterior of the cadet chapel, made of steel, aluminum and glass, has 17 pointy spires resembling fighter jets soaring up to the sky.Continuous panels of brilliant stained glass diffuse light into the chapel.
The bright glass panels rise to form the ceiling.

For all of Ohio's history, farming has been a major component of the state's economy. Therefore, the countryside is dotted with barns. Here are a few of my favorites. This barn is close to my home and I see it most every day. That old piece of equipment is always out front.For the bicentennial year, a barn in each of the counties was painted with this logo, my header shot is one of the bicentennial barns also.
Ohio has many barns with split rail fences such as this one.
I am always looking for a red barn to photograph, although most of the barns in Ohio are white.

At dawn last Saturday we were in Cincinnati at a balloon festival. As the sun was rising, the balloons were unrolled on the grass.
A crew of helpers is needed to hold the balloon.

A burner directs the flame into the balloon and the heated air makes it buoyant. I am always surprised that the balloon doesn't catch on fire.

These two crazy balloons were fun to watch as they inflated and took off.
In the U.S. a pilot of a hot air balloon must have a pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Up, up and away... I am always excited to see hot air balloons.

Air Show in My World

An estimated 80,000 people attended the Dayton Air Show this week end in the city of Vandalia where the airport is located.Ohio has hosted this two day event for 36 years. A multitude of ground displays were available.
The flying portion of the show was incredible with world class aviators demonstrating some amazing maneuvers.

Stunt pilots performed precision movements.
Sometimes it looked like they were about to crash.
The Aeroshell Acrobatic team flies four North American AT-6G aircraft, a plane originally designed as a trainer aircraft for pilots in World War II.

This wing walking demonstration is a husband - wife team; and the wife is out on the wing.

The Blue Angels performed a thrilling mix of amazing maneuvers and precision flying
Six pilots fly the Boeing F/A-18 Hornets, a high performance fighter and attack aircraft, painted in the Navy colors of blue and gold.
The Hornet measures 56 ft. long, 15 ft. high, and has a wingspan of 40 ft. It can reach speeds of 1,200 mph, and climb 30,000 feet per minute.
They were impressive and thrilling. And even though it started to rain during this performance, the crowd stayed and watched until the finish.

St. Patrick's Basilica is in the heart of beautiful downtown Ottawa. Founded in 1855, the structure is Gothic in style and made of local stone. The basilica seats 1,000 people.

I was in Canada the last weekend of May for a wedding, and I managed to get in a few sightseeing tours of the beautiful city of Ottawa. This is a shot of the Canadian Parliament Building.While there, we took a river boat cruise.
Since I only had my point and shoot camera, it was easy to ask another tourist to take this picture of me with my baby sister.

Every year our family vacations at the beach. Moms and Dads and kids, grandparents and grandchildren meet for a week of family fun and relaxation. Some like to play in the ocean waves or sand.

The Purple People Bridge, one of the nine bridges crossing the Ohio River at Cincinnati, has been in existence since 1872. Formerly the Newport Southbank Bridge, in 2002 it was heavily modified, painted purple, and re-opened in 2003 as a pedestrian only bridge.

Procter & Gamble was founded in 1837 by William Procter who immigrated from England, and James Gamble from Ireland, who met because they married sisters. What began as a small family operated candle and soap business is now a Fortune 500 worldwide corporation headquartered in Cincinnati.
This is where I ate lunch. Procter & Gamble is in the background on the left, and The Purple People Bridge is on the right.

A production company gained rare access inside this monastery of cloistered nuns in Toledo, Ohio.

A cast and crew from Detroit spent more than three weeks behind the secluded walls of the Monastery of the Visitation filming for an upcoming movie.
The movie "Leonie" tells the life story of Leonie Martin who overcame numerous struggles to become a Visitation nun.
I think this will be the first real film that shows life inside a religious monastery said the director.The religious order was founded in 1610 in France; and came to Toledo in 1915.
