The small town of Estes Park, Colorado (population 6,000) is called the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, where I saw Elk for the first time.During Sept and Oct mating season, bull elk can be heard bugling the characteristic rutting call of bulls. It is an astounding sound. (I was there in Oct.)
I easily snapped these shots (with a zoom lens) because the elk are not frightened by people.
The elk gather in open meadows and are visible for long periods of time when left undisturbed.
