My World in The Wilds

The Wilds is a 10,000 acre wild life conservation center in Southeast Ohio. It is home to rare and endangered species from around the world living in natural, open range habitat.I took the safari tour this Saturday, which lasted about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It was an extremely bumpy ride, but our tour guide stopped often so we could take pictures.
These wild horses followed our tour bus for almost half of the trip.
The White Rhino is a threatened species. The wide open spaces of The Wilds allows them to live in natural social groups which foster breeding.
This is an endangered One-horned Asian Rhino.
The Scimitar-Horned Onyx has been extinct in the wild since the mid 1970's.In 2007 an Onyx born at The Wilds was part of a group sent to Tunisia for a reintroduction project.
There are fewer than 3000 Grevy's Zebras (endangered) remaining in the wild.
Hunting for their skins and competition for food and water with domestic livestock are contributing factors in the decline in Grevy's Zebras.
Two large humps of fat are one of the distinguishing features of the Bactrian Camel. This fat allows the camel to survive long periods without food or water.
There are less than 1,000 wild Bactrian Camels left.
And this is me taking pictures at the back of our tour bus. What a fun trip this was.

What fantastic place! We have one here not too far from Seattle that I have been to and it is almost exactly like this one -- same open spaces, water and animals of all kinds! It's so wonderful to see them roaming free! Your photos are superb, Carol! Have a great week!

Wow, Carol what a wonderful place that is. I have never seen such a beautiful zebra as the Grevy's. Such fine stripes. The Bactrian camel looks smaller/shorter than the ones we get here in the Sudan and of course ours only has one hump. What a lovely trip you took us on, Bless you my friend. Jo.

i applaud places like this set aside for animals so they have a place to roam around freely.

are those camels shorter than the arabian ones?

So you did a real safari! Thank you for the tour! How wonderful to see so many wild animals. We have two of such parks in my country, but they are much smaller of course as our country itself is much smaller than Ohio.
Thank you for your visit and comment.

This open range concept is fantastic! I especially liked seeing wild horses roaming freely. It made me wonder how domesticated animals would fare, if allowed the same opportunities. I really enjoyed coming along on a bit of your journey.

Carol - These photos are so great. Who knew you could go on safari in OH! It looks like a wonderful area to see the animals close (PLENTY close if that last photo shows distance correctly)!

That is a terrific Wild Park. The animals have so much room. It is great that they can breed animals and put them back into the wild. Bravo Ohio. The zebras are tops.

Beautiful park. I remember a similar one we went to back in Florida. I think the place was called Lion Safari or something. Reminded those days. Thanks for sharing.
