Colosseum

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Constructed between 72-80 AD, it is one of the greatest works of Roman Architecture.

View of the inside... Partial flooring reveals exposed areas where wild animals and gladiators were confined until combat games began.
I took these photos on a trip to Rome for Easter in 2006. Click ABC on the sidebar for more of this fun meme.

Something I have always wanted to see in person.

The top photo is a familiar, but amazing shot, however I have never seen the inside view before. Its incredible that so much still remains.

I was going to do the same, but am now glad I didn't: your photos are a lot better than mine (I took mine from a moving bus).

Those are great pictures! Looking at the rows underneath makes me kinda cringe... please post more pictures of your visit!! And next time you go to Rome I'll have to go with you! I'm sure I'm much more fun then whomever you went with last time.... ;)

Marvelous shots of an incredible place I've always wanted to see!

Carol I did not mean to me snooty, it is just that Colosseum comes fron Colossus of Rhodes meaning gigantic, and being an historical structure, an American modern spelling mutation does not apply to the world at large or scholars of antiquities.

I'm sure no-one else had the gute to mention it.
Anyway I do think your interior is more telling than even most art books show.

Great choice today! When I saw the Colisseum for the first time, I thought it was so ironic that there it sits in the midst of modern day Rome! Smog from the air and cars turning it black with soot. But wonderful history and amazing to tour! :D

I have to admit that I haven't been there - but it is high on my list! These photos gets it even higher...

PS Thank you for the comment. I was standing on a quay a couple of hundred meters away, shooting with a telephoto lens.

I hope to go to Rome one day and see this for myself. I love the second picture, which shows so clearly the 'dungeon' area where the combatants were kept before their appearances, from which many would not return.

Thank you for these beautiful photos. I have never been to Italy, therefore I've never seen the Colosseum. We have lots of Roman monuments in my area, including the "arênes de Nimes", the théâtre antique d'Orange, and many other beauties. Next time, come visit us!

That must've been a great trip. I've always wanted to visit Italy. When/if I get there, the colosseum is on my wish list.
Thanks for the photo tour.

I have been lucky enough to see this fantastic structure twice, the last time in 2003, when they were doing some restoration on it. It's simply awesome, isn't it? Standing there, you have such a feeling of the history tied to that spot...not all of it good, of course:)
