Monastery

The original part of this building was purchased in 1861, and used as a center for training priests. The "new" center was built in 1878; and the present structure completed in 1922. The priests and brothers lived here and worked in the community as missionaries. When they passed away, they were buried in the cemetery in the foreground.

A front view of the building which is located in Carthagena, Ohio and is now a non-profit retirement community.  In 2006, the inside was renovated into independent apartments for senior living.
More sights from around the world are at ABC Wednesday.

Interesting use for the old monestary. The Seniors must feel they live in a palace. Nice post.

I grew up in Louisville, KY and there was an old seminary near my neighborhood...I thought immediately of it when I saw your photos...it was not nearly as impressive, though!

Very nice pictures of the old buildings. Glad to hear they are still being used.

What a huge building must be like a self contained village for the seniors.

Good heavens, what a very grand building! And certainly a very chequered history. Still, it's good to make use of buildings, even if we have to adapt them for use.

What happened to the cemetery when they decided to renovate the old monastery into apartments for seniors? Still there? If so, a selling gimmick for seniors would be, "If you live here and you go, you are not going far." LOL. Just kidding.

great 'M' word Carol. The monastery is lovely. I like the shot looking straight down the road, very cool effect.
