E is for Erie

Lake Erie is the smallest of the Great Lakes in volume, and borders the northeast portion of Ohio.  This is the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse at the end of the West Breakwater in Lake Erie.  The lighthouse is a square cast iron tower attached to a 2-story cast iron keeper's house.  Built in 1925,  it is now automated and managed by the Coast Guard.

This is the old Fairport Harbor Lighthouse which is now a museum. It was operational from 1825 to 1925 when the lighthouse above replaced it.

So the lighthouse keeper actually lived in the lighthouse, or at least next to it. It looks quite cosy, doesn't it?

Beautiful shots! I'm originally from western Pa., and I remember going to the Lake Erie shore as a kid; back then, we couldn't swim in it because it was so polluted, but I understand they have cleaned it up FABULOUSLY, and swimming in it is a regular occurrence now (well - in the warmer months, anyway! LoL)

Have a great week!

Lovely post, lovely blog...when I was in grammar school we sang a song about the Erie Canal. It stuck with me because I had no idea where it was...didn't know about Lake Erie or history of canals, and certainly didn't know why the donkey in our song book was pulling that boat! Thank you.

These are gorgeous photos! The new lighthouse is very unique looking, but I reeeally like the keeper's house on the old one, especially the red.
